There have been rumors and speculation about the potential features that might be included in a new Ultra HD format and finally the new standards have been officially released. There will finally be a consistent source of UHD programs to go with your UHD television.
The new ULTRA HD Blu-ray discs will have a capacity of 66GB and 100GB of data on dual or triple layer discs. It supports higher frame rate such as HFR, 48 fps, high dynamic range, a wider color gamut. and support for new audio codecs from Dolby and DTS, as well as many other features.
“The specification also mandates all new Ultra HD Blu-ray players be capable of playing back current Blu-ray Discs, giving consumers access to the vast library of more than 10,000 titles currently available on Blu-ray Disc.
Licensing of Ultra HD Blu-ray is scheduled to begin this Summer. The BDA is working closely with industry leaders in the authoring, testing, certification and replication industries to develop the tools and process needed to ensure interoperability between players and software and to facilitate the development of a robust ecosystem to support the hardware and title launch of Ultra HD Blu-ray.”
Licensing will begin over the next few months and the first discs and Ultra HD players should be available by Christmas 2015.
